Zen Cart began in 2003 as a fork of osCommerce, created by Zen Ventures, LLC to offer a friendlier, more flexible take on open-source online store software. It kept the same PHP and MySQL foundation as its parent project but set out on its own direction almost immediately, introducing a dedicated template system that gave store owners far more control over how their shops looked and worked.

The 1.3.x series marked the platform’s biggest architectural shift, moving away from the historic tables-based layout inherited from osCommerce toward a largely CSS-based design system — a change that brought Zen Cart in line with modern web standards and made storefront customization dramatically easier.

Zen Cart is released under the GNU General Public License and remains free and open source today. As official development has slowed in recent years, a community of third-party developers has kept the platform current by building plugins and modules that address modern security and functionality needs. I’ve been part of that maintainer community since the beginning, in 2003, and continue to lead it.
